Fick’s law describes the movement of gases across the alveolar membrane.

Fick says: A thinner memrane facilitates diffusion.

Fick says: a larger surface area allows for more gas diffusion.

Fick also says: The more of a gas there is on one side of a membrane; the more likely it is to diffuse to the other side!


Effective ventilation is critically dependant on sufficient perfusion to remove carbon dioxide.



“Shunts” and “deadspace” are examples of mismatch between perfusion and ventilation.
