ECG interpretation is a cognitive skill that demands considerable time and effort to develop but it is an essential skill for paramedics, physicians and other healthcare professionals, especially those working in cardiology, emergency medicine, and critical care.

The ECG can help the healthcare professional to diagnose a wide range of conditions including heart disease, drug toxicities, and electrolyte imbalances. Understanding and properly identifying an EKG helps to guide treatment and optimize outcomes for cardiac patients experiencing an arrhythmia. In fact, the EKG test above contains some of the arrhythmias that determine the course of treatment in the ACLS algorithms. Nobody would argue the fact that applying the correct ACLS algorithm benefits patients (or that applying an incorrect algorithm may not)!
